History

The Straits Settlements Police Force (SSPF), sometimes known as the Straits Police, was the Colonial Police Force that oversaw public safety in the directly run British Straits Settlements colony in Malaya.

It oversaw the police forces of Singapore, Penang Island, Province Wellesley, Malacca and Labuan, and other Malayan territories directly run by the British colonial government. It was instrumental in the colonial period in public safety and later on, domestic security against Chinese secret societies, Japanese espionage and the emerging threats of Communism.

World War Two ended the SSPF after the Imperial Japanese military invaded and occupied British Malaya. Post-war, the force was disbanded. The Singapore Police Force (SPF) and Polis Di-Raja Malaysia/Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) are successors of the SSPF.
